You need a heater that sits in open space and warms the room from every side. If you’re after real warmth in a room with no fireplace, with a look that belongs in a farmhouse or a cabin, the Napoleon Bayfield is the one to consider. A thin-metal stove needs its fan running to move the heat; cast iron keeps radiating either way. What Makes It Special The whole body is cast iron, and cast iron doesn’t just contain a fire—it soaks up the heat and radiates it into the room the way the sun warms your face. That’s warmth you feel from across the room with nothing blowing and nothing humming. The fire itself earns the stove’s place in the room: a randomly flickering flame over hand-painted logs and a glowing ember bed, with a top light for evenings when you want the glow without the burn. The included remote runs power, blower, and thermostat from the couch—set 70 and the stove holds the room there on its own. And because the ignition is electronic with a battery backup, there’s no pilot flame burning gas between fires, and it still lights when the power’s out—as long as you’ve kept batteries in it. Possible Downsides • The fan is optional, not included. Without it, the Bayfield heats the room it’s in rather than pushing warm air down a hallway.• Traditional styling only.
