You need an insert that fills the hearth with fire, not framing. If you have an existing wood-burning fireplace and you want the fire itself to be what people notice—one you can run low on a mild evening or high through a cold snap—the Oakville X4 is the one to look at. Pick a standard-size insert instead and you’ll be warm, but the fire will read smaller than the hearth around it. What Makes It Special The X4’s H-style burner runs flames across the whole firebox in three layers, so you see a wall of fire rather than a single row of flame down the middle—518 square inches of fire, the largest view in the Oakville series. And because the front and rear burners modulate independently, you can turn it down to a glow for a fall evening or open everything up when January arrives, without the oversized-fireplace problem of cooking you out of the room. Control is the second thing. The included remote handles power, flame, heat, and blower speed from the couch, and the eFIRE Bluetooth app puts flame height, blower speed, and the ember bed on your phone. A heat-circulating blower comes included, and top lights add an illuminated effect over the logs, so the firebox looks alive even at low flame. The look is adjustable end to end: faceplates in black, charcoal, copper, and gun metal in 2 1/2″ and 5″ widths, square or arched, with matching backerplates; interior panels in Old Town Red, Westminster, or Newport brick or Mirro-Flame reflective black porcelain; split oak logs included with optional birch or driftwood sets; and an optional riser box for added height.
