You need a linear fire sized for the room it’s actually in. If you want the long, modern flame in a space where an oversized unit would cook you out of the room, the Napoleon Ascent Linear 42 is the one to look at. Pick a bigger unit and you’ll burn it in short bursts; pick this one and it can burn all evening. What Makes It Special The fire is the point here. A wide ribbon of flame burns over an included bed of topaz CRYSTALINE crushed glass—glass that glints under the flame instead of the usual dark interior—and the heat behind it is deliberately modest, so the fire can run for the whole evening instead of in ten-minute bursts. It also keeps working when the grid doesn’t. The ignition has battery back-up, so the fireplace still lights with the power out—batteries aren’t included, and a power bank you already own will do the job. Planning a TV above it? The optional Universal Heat Management system moves warm air into the room through ducts instead of letting it stack against the wall above the fire. It runs without electricity, and it’s what allows reduced clearances above the fireplace so electronics can hang there safely. The look is adjustable: split oak, birch, and driftwood log kits, Beach Fire, Mineral Rock, Shore Fire, and Woodland media, glass beads and embers in a range of colors, Ledgestone or reflective black porcelain decorative panels, and a four-sided black finishing trim for installations that need more coverage.
