Put it in the living room and the dining room behind that same wall gets a blank surface, so one space gets the glow and the other gets drywall. You need a fire you can see, and feel, from both sides of the wall. If you’re building or remodeling around a room divider or a shared wall between two spaces your family actually lives in, the Napoleon HD81 turns that wall into the reason people gather on both sides—where a standard single-sided fireplace would leave one room out. It builds into a framed wall and gets finished with tile or stone, so plan for that finish work as part of the whole job, not an afterthought. What Makes It Special The HD81 is a see-through fireplace with a clean face on both sides—no grilles, no frame competing with the flame—so the glass shows as much fire as possible and the same fire becomes the focal point of two rooms at once. The heat is adjustable, so you can dial in comfort for both spaces instead of overheating one to warm the other. The included remote runs every function from the couch: power, flame height, and fan speed if you add the fan kit. Top lights keep the firebox glowing even between fires. And if the power goes out, the battery backup means it still lights and keeps making heat—as long as you’ve kept 4 AA batteries or a charged power bank in it. Possible Downsides • The fan is optional, not included—add the fan kit if you want warm air pushed deeper into both rooms.• Battery backup needs 4 AA batteries or a power bank, neither included, to light during an outage.• Propane requires a separate conversion kit; out of the box it runs on natural gas. If you want one fire doing the work of two fireplaces, the HD81 is the right decision. Both sides of the wall become the room everyone ends up in. Make it yours with a glass ember, oak log, or mineral rock burner, Mirro-Flame reflective porcelain or sandstone brick panels, glass embers and beads in amber, black, blue, clear, red, or topaz, and black andirons.
